I’m sure like many intermediate to advanced photographers, you’ve gone through enough ‘safe’ lighting techniques using soft, diffused light coming from a softbox, brolly, or scrim.
You’ll find that many of your photos tend to get quite uniform and ‘safe’, lacking that ‘bite’ in impact. One great activity and technique worth honing would be the use of hard light.
The skill of controlling contrast and exaggerating shapes and detail with a hard light source almost always adds more impact to portraits – when done right.
Adorama’s Mark Wallace created this great tutorial and feature on shooting with hard light that should be very helpful to you. So go check it out!
Go ahead and post some of your great hard-lit portrait samples in the comment section too while you’re at it.
