Tamron has always been producing reliable and sharp zoom f/2.8 zoom lenses in the past. The popular Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP is cheap, sharp, and comes with image stabilization as well. Now Tamron has a new, modern lens announced – the Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD.
The New Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD
Never shy of super long acronyms and cryptic codes, the Tamron SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD has an normal focal length for full-frame cameras at 24mm wide and 70mm tele while maintaining a constant f/2.8 aperture.
In addition, Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization system called Vibration Compensation (VC) coupled with a new ultrasonic drive (USD) focus motor ensures a quiet and fast auto-focus performance.
Improved Image Quality and Better Auto Focus
Tamron’s f/2.8 line has rarely disappointed its owners in the past, but it seems like 3rd-party lens buyers (particularly with Canon users) always have to choose between Tamron’s image quality or Sigma’s fast autofocus as the two manufacturers can’t seem to deliver both at the same time wtih their f/2.8 lenses.
Tamron’s auto-focus has been known to be a slower than Sigmas (and OEM lens equivalent), so hopefully, the new USD motor in the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD will fill that hole and deliver lighting fast (and accurate) AF performance.
The Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD comes in Canon, Nikon, and Sony mounts (as Pentax and Olympus doesn’t offer full-frame DSLRs yet).
