One of my pet peeves with some DSLR owners is how much they baby their camera gear. Sure it’s prudent to get rid of fungus-inducing oil stains on the lens after a shoot or cleaning a lens to perfection before a shoot to avoid nasties like flare and ghosting, but a lot of people are taking this beyond logic.
Here’s a funny video from the good folks at DigitalRev (the Top Gear of photography) showing you how absurd these cameras can endure damage and you have to wonder, how much photo opportunities are you missing out when you’re wiping that lens filter endlessly and hiding the camera in a bag all day?
And don’t think this only applies to mid to high-end models either…
Yes, these ‘tests’ are not scientific and borders on lunacy, but it’s comforting to know that you and I will almost never get our cameras to those levels of abuse and a light drizzle or an occasional smudge on the camera should’nt stop you from taking great pictures.

I have to say I have never been very careful with my camera (except when new) I still use a 20D that is 7 years old (in digital terms ancient) and the only damage I have ever done is a couple of gouges on my kit lens and 50mm. They are much tougher than people think.
Agreed…
