Panasonic GH3, Lumix G Vario X 35-100mm f/2.8 | Crazy Exciting Panasonic Micro 4/3 Releases

Micro 4/3 Seriously Getting Serious | Panasonic GH3 and Vario X 35-100mm f/2.8

Back when the first Micro 4/3 camera was released, it was seen as nothing more than a bigger-and-better-than-a-point-and-shoot and nothing more. It never threatened the DSLR market with the limited number of lenses and still rather lack-lustre performance in auto-focus and image quality.

In just a couple of years, the market is filled with mirrorless offers and these cameras have matched, if not exceeded, sales figures of DSLRs in many major photography-influencing countries like Japan, Hong Kong, etc.

And we have to thank Panasonic and Olympus for their efforts.

The Panasonic GH3 – Movie Madness

The GH series of Panasonic mirrorless cameras have always been geared towards exemplary video shooting, and the GH3 is taking the bull by its horns in this regard.

Don’t believe me? Watch this:

Pick up your jaw off the floor now, let’s continue.

The GH3 is obviously not for everyone. It’s not cheap, it’s rather large, and it’s rather geared towards a strange obsession with video, despite it being a still-camera in form.

The official press release is rather long, so I’ll just link it here. In a nutshell, here’s what you’re getting:

  • 16-megapixels
  • Supersonic Wave Filter
  • 13 video encoding parameters
  • Approx. 240 min continuous video recording
  • Flicker Reduction
  • Built-in WiFi
  • Eletronic Viewfinder with 100% coverage and 0.67x magnification (35mm equivalent)
  • Metering sensor with 144-zone multi-pattern sensing system
  • ISO 200-12,800, expandable to ISO 125 to 25,600
  • 3″ 614K dots OLED LCD

Panasonic Lumix G Vario X 35-100mm f/2.8 Zoom

The Micro 4/3 lens line up has a good list of excellent primes and decent all-around consumer zoom lens, but not a pro-grade f/2.8 telephoto zoom lens.

Having released the well-received Lumix G Vario X 12-35mm f/2.8, it’s expected that a telephoto zoom will follow, and here it is, the 35-100mm f/2.8.

Panasonic Official Press Release for the Lumix G X 35-100 f/2.8

From Panasonic: The LUMIX G X 35-100mm F2.8: Panasonic’s new bright, precise and weather sealed zoom lens in a high quality compact aluminum body

17th September, 2012– Panasonic has today launched a new addition to its LUMIX G Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) range, the H-HS35100 – an X series 35-100mm F2.8 compact zoom lens. Designed for compatibility with the Micro Four Thirds System, the elegant metal body means the LUMIX G X 35-100mm lens is bright and precise delivering outstanding quality. Ready for adventure, the LUMIX G X 35-100mm lens is weather sealed – dustproof and splashproof – so you can always capture the action in a dusty desert or sailing the Seven Seas.

With a maximum aperture of F2.8 available throughout the entire zoom range, the LUMIX G X 35-100mm lens will provide exceptional detail even in low light situations. Beautifully warm shots are possible with the exceptionally shallow depth of field, giving you incredible creative control over background blur – perfect for portrait photography.

Giving photographers and videographers a powerful and versatile tool, the LUMIX G X 35-100mm perfectly complements the LUMIX G X 12-35mm lens so your kit bag is ready for any scenario. Continuing to deliver the outstanding high-quality of the LUMIX G series, the LUMIX G X 35-100mm and LUMIX G 12-35mm lens are the ideal fit for the new LUMIX GH3 – premium quality, weather sealed and ready for action.

The lens incorporates Panasonic’s Power O.I.S. optical image stabiliser, which makes it easy to shoot extremely clear photos even in low-light situations – especially at high zoom – by suppressing the blur caused by handshake. For stunning clarity, the LUMIX G X 35-100mm lens is treated with Panasonic’s Nano Surface Coating technology, minimising reflection across the entire visual light range (380nm-780nm) by applying the extra-low refractive index coating with nano-sized structures on the surface of the lens.. This significantly reduces the amount of ghosting and lens flare.

The LUMIX G X 35-100mm F2.8 is the latest addition to Panasonic’s LUMIX G microsystem, which includes the world’s largest range of Micro Four Thirds lenses and accessories, making sure you have the right set-up to capture every moment.
