Canon’s Answer to the Mirrorless Launches – The Canon G1X Large Sensor Compact

First Ever Large Sensor Canon G-Series

In a rather sudden announcement, Canon released the large sensor Canon G1X digital camera. Sporting a 18.7 mm x 14mm (1.5″) sensor, the new sensor is significantly larger than most compacts, in fact, 6x larger than the previous Canon PowerShot G12 and slightly larger than the popular Micro 4/3 format by Panasonic and Olympus who are dominating the mirrorless market right now.

Although still not a full APS-C sensor like the Sony NEX series, the Canon G1X is more like a Fuji X100 where it’s a fixed lens, large sensor camera though the G1X features a zoom lens and is targeting a less niche market than the Fuji.

The body design looks very much like the successful Powershot G12 but some changes are subtle but noticeable including the modified grip area and larger lens to accomodate the new sensor.

Canon’s official stance for the Canon G1X is for the camera to be the perfect companion to Canon’s EOS DSLR line-up. With specifications such as 14MP high-resolution sensor, relatively fast 28-112mm f/2.8-f/5.8 zoom lens, advanced video features and more.

HD Video

1080p at 24fps Full HD movies with stereo tops the video shooting capabilities and the additional electronic wind filter will certainly increase production quality even with the standard microphone, reducing zoom and focus noise as well as ambient wind noise.
